Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand: Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand successfully adapts the series' signature tactical gameplay into a roguelite format. While it could benefit from more maps and deeper endgame progression, its intense battles, satisfying co-op mode, and faithful RTS mechanics make it an excellent spin-off for strategy fans. – NikolaOtasevic
A Return to What Company of Heroes Does Best
Few real-time strategy franchises have managed to preserve their identity over the years quite like Company of Heroes. Despite the changes introduced with each installment, the core of the series has always remained the same: tactical decision-making, smart unit management, and the feeling that every choice on the battlefield can determine the outcome of a fight.
That's what made Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand such an intriguing experiment. Instead of another large-scale campaign or a traditional multiplayer expansion, Relic opted for a standalone roguelite wave-defense experience that condenses everything the series does best into short, intense battles.
On paper, it sounds like a risky idea.
In practice, Final Stand successfully captures everything that has made Company of Heroes one of the greatest RTS franchises while introducing enough fresh ideas to justify its existence.

A Fast-Paced Roguelite Formula That Works Surprisingly Well
Final Stand abandons the traditional campaign structure and focuses entirely on combat.
There's no lengthy base building, no slow resource gathering, and no extended economic management. Instead, you're immediately thrown into defending your position against increasingly difficult enemy waves.
The standard mode consists of 12 waves, while Endless Mode is designed for players who want to test their tactical skills for as long as possible.
Between each wave, you choose new units, passive abilities, and upgrades that shape the direction of your run. This roguelite progression ensures that no two playthroughs feel exactly the same.
What impressed me the most is that Final Stand never loses the identity of Company of Heroes. Cover mechanics, careful machine gun placement, tank positioning, and perfectly timed artillery strikes remain just as important as ever. The only difference is that everything is condensed into shorter, more intense sessions.

Classic Factions with Plenty of Tactical Variety
The game features four iconic factions:
- US Forces
- British Forces
- Wehrmacht
- Deutsches Afrikakorps
Each faction comes with its own unique units, progression tree, and tactical approach.
Regardless of your choice, every match constantly forces you to adapt. Properly positioned machine guns, carefully placed armor, and well-timed support abilities often make the difference between holding the line and being completely overwhelmed.
These moments perfectly capture what has always made Company of Heroes so satisfying.
Boss Battles and Co-op Add Even More Excitement
One of Final Stand's strongest additions is its 36 unique boss units, each introducing new mechanics and rewarding successful players with powerful upgrades.
Random battlefield events also keep every run unpredictable, forcing you to adjust your strategy on the fly.
The game truly shines in co-op mode.
Defending your base alongside a friend, coordinating unit placement, and saving each other during desperate last stands creates exactly the kind of memorable moments that have defined Company of Heroes for years.
There's Still Room for Improvement
As much as I enjoyed Final Stand, it isn't perfect.
The biggest issue is the amount of content. Five maps provide a solid starting point, but after enough runs you'll likely start wishing for greater variety.
Endless Mode also feels like it could benefit from more long-term progression, additional modifiers, and stronger meta-progression systems that encourage players to keep coming back.
Enemy waves can occasionally become predictable after extended play sessions, although never to the point where they significantly hurt the overall experience.

What I Liked
- Excellent adaptation of roguelite mechanics to the Company of Heroes formula.
- Tactical gameplay remains as satisfying as ever.
- Four distinct factions with unique playstyles.
- Fantastic co-op experience.
- Dynamic events and a wide variety of boss units.
- Short, action-packed sessions perfect for quick play.
What Could Be Better
- Only five maps at launch.
- Endless Mode could offer deeper long-term progression.
- More enemy wave variety would improve replayability.
- Additional roguelite modifiers would make every run feel even more unique.
Final Verdict
Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand may not be the largest piece of content Relic has ever released for the franchise, but it succeeds where it matters most—it reminds players why Company of Heroes remains one of the finest real-time strategy series ever created.
Its roguelite structure fits surprisingly well with the franchise's signature tactical gameplay, and every run offers enough variety to keep you coming back for one more attempt.
While I'd certainly welcome more maps and a deeper endgame progression system, what's already here provides hours of highly enjoyable strategic gameplay.
If you're a fan of RTS games, wave-defense experiences, or simply want to see Company of Heroes from a fresh perspective, Final Stand is absolutely worth your time.
Score: 9/10
Final Stand isn't just a successful spin-off—it proves that sometimes you don't need to reinvent a winning formula. You simply need to refine what made it great in the first place.
