Paddle Paddle Paddle Review – Paddling, Falling, and Couples Therapy

Some games demand patience, precision, and complete concentration. Then there's Paddle Paddle Paddle, a game that might make you look at the person sitting next to you as if they've deliberately steered you straight into a pool of lava. All because of a paddle.

The concept is ridiculously simple. You control a small raft and must navigate it through a series of obstacles, treacherous passages, and platforming challenges. The catch? Each player controls one paddle, meaning you need to work together and get your timing right if you want to make any real progress. One badly timed stroke can ruin an otherwise perfect run, sending your raft spinning into danger or forcing you back to the last checkpoint.

And that's where the fun begins.

Better Together

My wife and I had an absolute blast playing Paddle Paddle Paddle. In fact, after spending some time with the game, I became convinced that it's one of those titles that works far better when shared with someone else than when you're playing alone.

It's not just about having someone else take care of one of the paddles. The real magic lies in the moments when you're trying to coordinate your movements, explain what the other person should be doing, and somehow end up exactly where you didn't want to be. It's even better when both of you are convinced you're doing everything right, while the raft continues spinning as if it has a mind of its own.

And if you've had a drink or two before jumping in, the whole experience can become even more entertaining. Your paddling skills might not improve, but at least you'll have a good laugh every time your latest attempt ends in disaster. Just don't expect your coordination to get any better as the evening goes on.

Of course, the game can test your patience. Obstacles that look deceptively simple can take numerous attempts to overcome, and repeatedly failing just moments before reaching the finish line can be genuinely frustrating. But with the right company, even those moments become part of the fun. Instead of giving up after another failed attempt, you'll probably find yourself saying, “One more try.” And then another. And maybe five more after that.

Simple Controls, Complicated Physics

The basic mechanics are easy enough to understand. You control your paddle and work with your partner to steer the raft through a course filled with hazards. Playing solo is a different challenge altogether, as you'll need to control both paddles yourself.

However, simple controls don't necessarily translate into intuitive handling. Momentum, physics, and the timing of each stroke can produce some genuinely unexpected results. Sometimes you'll feel as though you've executed a manoeuvre perfectly, only for the raft to veer off in the wrong direction a moment later.

For some players, that's part of the charm. For others, it's likely to become a source of frustration. Paddle Paddle Paddle isn't a game you'll appreciate for its perfectly refined controls. Its appeal lies in the chaos that emerges when you try to work with the game's physics while coordinating your movements with another person.

Checkpoints help soften the blow of failure, but they don't eliminate the need for repetition. You'll often find yourself tackling the same section over and over again, learning when to slow down, when to paddle, and how to avoid that one obstacle that keeps ruining your plans.

Limited Content, Plenty of Laughs

The game's biggest weakness is its limited amount of content. The main experience revolves around a single lengthy course, so don't expect a sprawling adventure packed with different levels and mechanics. Depending on your skill and persistence, you can reach the finish line in just a few hours.

There are additional incentives to keep playing, including cosmetic unlockables and the opportunity to improve your completion times. That's enough to encourage players who enjoy mastering a course or competing with friends, but it won't necessarily appeal to anyone looking for a more substantial experience.

Still, it's important to understand what you're getting into. Paddle Paddle Paddle isn't a game you'll spend dozens of hours playing for its story, character development, or deep gameplay systems. Its biggest strength is the shared experience it creates when you're playing with someone else.

Paddle Paddle Paddle review

Paddle Paddle Paddle is one of those games that's difficult to judge solely by the number of levels, the precision of its controls, or the amount of content on offer. Yes, the handling can feel awkward. Yes, the game is relatively short. And yes, there will probably be moments when you wonder why you're still attempting the same obstacle for the hundredth time.

But when you have the right person sitting next to you, those shortcomings can become part of the experience. My wife and I had a fantastic time with the game, and that ultimately matters more to me than whether every obstacle feels perfectly tuned. When a game creates moments of genuine laughter, playful bickering, and memories you'll still be talking about after you've turned it off, it's doing something right.

I wouldn't recommend Paddle Paddle Paddle to everyone, particularly those looking for a lengthy platforming adventure or a game packed with content. However, if you're after a short, chaotic co-op experience to enjoy with a friend, your partner, or someone who won't hold a grudge after being blamed for the hundredth failed attempt, this could be just what you're looking for.

Just make sure you agree on who's handling the left paddle and who's handling the right one before you start. Apparently, that's harder than it sounds.

We tested Paddle Paddle Paddle on the Nintendo Switch 2.
