Some Games Don't Need to Be Loud to Leave a Lasting Impression

Most modern games try to grab your attention with spectacular action sequences, massive worlds, and constant excitement. Helix: Descent N Ascent takes the opposite approach. Instead of overwhelming you with flashy moments, it invites you to slow down, think, and explore at your own pace.

This is one of those games that stays with you not because of what it shows, but because of how it makes you feel while playing. Its quiet atmosphere, mysterious world, and intelligently designed puzzles create an experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

A World That Tells Its Story Without Words

You awaken in a desolate, almost abstract world where there are no people and very few answers. Before long, you encounter a mysterious figure who looks exactly like you—except for a single scar.

This strange doppelgänger sometimes helps you, sometimes confuses you, but the game never rushes to explain who they are or why they're following you.

That lingering mystery becomes one of the game's greatest strengths.

Although the narrative remains subtle, the environment constantly suggests that there's a much larger story hidden beneath the surface. More than once, I found myself exploring areas that weren't necessary for progression simply because I wanted to understand this fascinating world a little better.

A Visual Style You Won't Forget

One of Helix's greatest strengths is its visual presentation.

The entire world is hand-drawn, taking inspiration from 1970s Franco-Belgian comics, 1980s independent comic books, and 1990s manga. The combination of bold black-and-white visuals, sharp lines, and organic designs creates a distinctive artistic identity that stands apart from most modern indie games.

Every scene feels like a page taken from a beautifully illustrated graphic novel.

The atmosphere is further enhanced by an excellent soundtrack featuring contributions from Jim Guthrie. The music remains subtle, melancholic, and slightly haunting without ever overpowering the experience, perfectly complementing the game's quiet exploration.

Puzzles That Respect the Player's Intelligence

The gameplay is entirely centered around solving puzzles.

As you progress, you gradually unlock new abilities such as moving blocks, controlling drones, using a grappling hook, inverting environments, and several other unique tools that initially seem fairly straightforward.

The real magic begins when the game asks you to combine those abilities.

One of my favorite aspects is that Helix never explains more than it absolutely needs to. It teaches you the basics, then encourages you to experiment and discover solutions on your own.

There were several moments when I stood in front of a puzzle convinced I had missed something obvious. A few minutes later, I realized that combining two abilities I'd never thought of using together created an entirely new solution.

Those moments are where Helix truly shines.

Every solved puzzle feels earned, rewarding your own observation and creativity rather than simply following instructions.

Progression That Encourages Exploration

Helix isn't entirely linear.

The first few regions can be explored in different orders, while newly acquired abilities gradually unlock additional paths, hidden areas, and optional puzzles.

There's also meaningful post-game content for players who want even greater challenges after completing the main adventure.

This structure creates a satisfying sense of freedom while rewarding curiosity without unnecessarily stretching the game's length.

Not Without Its Flaws

As enjoyable as Helix is, it isn't perfect.

I occasionally encountered minor technical issues, particularly in the later sections and post-game content. There are also situations where using an ability incorrectly can leave you temporarily stuck.

The monochromatic visual style looks stunning, but during longer play sessions it can become somewhat tiring on the eyes, especially when using abilities that further alter the game's contrast.

There were also a few puzzles where I wasn't entirely sure whether I had overlooked the intended solution or whether the game simply hadn't communicated a new mechanic clearly enough. These moments are relatively rare, but they can briefly interrupt the otherwise smooth pacing.

What I Liked

  • Beautiful hand-drawn black-and-white art style.
  • Clever and rewarding puzzle design.
  • Excellent ability-combination mechanics.
  • Mysterious and immersive atmosphere.
  • Outstanding soundtrack.
  • Non-linear exploration and enjoyable post-game content.

What Could Be Better

  • Occasional technical issues.
  • Some mechanics could be introduced more clearly.
  • The monochrome presentation may become tiring during long sessions.
  • Players looking for constant action may find the pacing too slow.

Final Verdict

Helix: Descent N Ascent doesn't try to impress players with spectacle. Instead, it relies on atmosphere, intelligently designed puzzles, and a mysterious world that constantly encourages exploration and curiosity.

While a few technical issues and its deliberately slow pacing may not appeal to everyone, it delivers one of the most rewarding puzzle experiences I've played this year.

If you enjoyed games like The Witness, Baba Is You, or Gorogoa, but you're looking for something with a stronger visual identity and a more mysterious world, Helix: Descent N Ascent is absolutely worth your time.

Score: 8.5/10

Helix: Descent N Ascent proves that silence can be just as powerful as spectacle. Black and white—but anything but colorless.
