Running a restaurant is hard enough without having to turn your customers into the main ingredient. Space Savory takes that idea and builds an entire sci-fi cooking simulation around it. After crash-landing on an unknown planet, our astronaut needs fuel to get back home. Naturally, the best way to make money is to open a diner, serve hungry aliens and turn some of them into the very meals they'll be ordering next.

It's a bizarre premise, but one that gives the game a surprisingly entertaining gameplay loop, mixing restaurant management, resource gathering, cooking minigames and plenty of dark humour.

Gameplay – From Customer to Main Course

The core gameplay loop revolves around attracting customers, collecting ingredients, preparing food and managing your inventory. Each alien species carries unique ingredients inside its body, which are needed to prepare specific meals, desserts and drinks.

This means running the diner involves more than simply waiting for orders. You need to identify which ingredients are missing, find the right customers and take them to the back room to harvest what you need. It's certainly not the kind of supply chain Gordon Ramsay would approve of.

To make things easier, you also have access to a cloning machine. It allows you to duplicate collected ingredients, helping you maintain your stock without constantly having to hunt down new customers. Resource management becomes an important part of the experience, as you need to keep track of what you have, what you need and which items you can actually serve.

Once the ingredients are ready, it's time to head into the kitchen. Instead of simply selecting a recipe and watching a progress bar fill up, Space Savory gives every dish and drink its own minigame. These activities test your reflexes, attention and timing, making the actual cooking process more interactive.

Some recipes are relatively straightforward, while others demand considerably more precision. Your performance affects the quality of the finished product, so getting things right can make a difference.

However, the difficulty isn't always particularly well balanced. Certain minigames have extremely tight timing windows, making some cooking sessions feel more frustrating than challenging. There are moments when a failed attempt feels less like a mistake and more like being punished for missing a ridiculously small window of opportunity.

Restaurant Management and Side Activities

Cooking is only one part of the business. You also need to manage your menu, ingredients and available equipment. New recipes and options become available as you progress, gradually expanding what your diner can offer.

You don't necessarily have to serve everything at once, either. Adjusting your menu to match the ingredients and equipment currently available is part of keeping the business running smoothly.

Space Savory also takes a more relaxed approach to restaurant management than many traditional cooking sims. Customers can be called into the restaurant using a bell, and there isn't a constant countdown forcing you to complete every order within a strict time limit. This gives you more freedom to organise your supplies and prepare food without feeling like you're constantly racing against the clock.

But running an intergalactic diner comes with plenty of distractions.

You can gamble with shady space-flies, report wanted alien criminals to the galactic police, sell celebrity gossip to paparazzi and defend your hard-earned cash from space pirates. These activities provide additional ways to make money and break up the routine of collecting ingredients and preparing orders.

Not every side activity is equally entertaining, but they help give the world more personality. There's always something unusual happening outside your kitchen, and the game does a decent job of keeping the experience from becoming too repetitive too quickly.

Progression and Game Structure

The main objective is straightforward: earn enough money to buy fuel and continue your journey back to Earth. Our astronaut's accidental landing turns into a rather questionable business opportunity, and expanding the restaurant becomes the primary way to make progress.

As you advance, you visit new planets and gain access to additional content, ingredients and customers. The experience gradually expands rather than constantly forcing you to start from scratch.

Money and collected items remain important throughout the journey, while new opportunities give you more ways to improve your operation. This makes progression relatively easy to follow and gives you a clear reason to keep playing.

Space Savory is a single-player experience, with its main gameplay loop built around restaurant management, cooking and a collection of side activities. It doesn't offer traditional multiplayer or co-op modes, but there is enough variety in its individual tasks to keep the experience interesting.

The game is less concerned with delivering a complex management simulation and more focused on creating an entertaining sequence of strange encounters, cooking challenges and increasingly questionable business decisions.

Visual Style and Dark Humour

Space Savory uses hand-drawn 2D artwork that fits its unusual setting perfectly. The alien customers have distinct designs and personalities, while the restaurant and surrounding environments help establish the strange atmosphere of this forgotten corner of the galaxy.

The humour is arguably one of the game's strongest elements. Dark comedy isn't just something reserved for occasional dialogue or background jokes; it's built directly into the core mechanics.

The idea of harvesting customers for ingredients and then serving those ingredients back to other customers is already ridiculous enough, but the game keeps finding new ways to push the concept further.

Dialogue and unexpected encounters add even more personality to the experience. The contrast between the colourful presentation and the rather disturbing nature of the restaurant's business model works surprisingly well.

Space Savory review

Space Savory has an original concept and manages to build a surprisingly entertaining game around it. The combination of restaurant management, resource gathering, cooking minigames and dark humour gives it a distinct identity, while the various side activities help keep things interesting.

Its biggest weaknesses are the uneven difficulty of certain minigames and the repetitive nature of some activities. Restaurant management could also offer more depth, particularly for players looking for a more traditional simulation experience.

Still, Space Savory knows exactly what it wants to be. It doesn't try to deliver an incredibly complex management sim or an endless progression system. Instead, it focuses on entertaining gameplay, ridiculous situations and a genuinely unusual setting.

At $9.99, it's a worthwhile indie experience, especially for fans of unconventional simulators and dark comedy. Not every shift at this diner will be perfect, but there's enough here to make you want to clock in for another one.
