Songs of Glimmerwick Review – A Magical School That Moves to Its Own Tune

What if magic didn't rely on wands and complicated incantations, but on music instead? That's the idea behind Songs of Glimmerwick, an RPG that takes us to a charming school of magic on a mysterious island, where attending classes, tending gardens, making friends, and exploring the surrounding world are just as important as mastering ancient spells.

At first glance, it's easy to compare the game to titles like Stardew Valley, with a generous helping of fantasy and life at a magical academy. However, Songs of Glimmerwick has enough ideas of its own to stand out from the crowd. Its most intriguing feature is the way it combines music, magic, and everyday activities to create a world where melodies aren't just part of the soundtrack. They're an essential tool for interacting with the world around you.

Welcome to the School of Magic

The adventure begins with our arrival at Etchery, a school dedicated to the study of magic and music. Here, we won't simply attend lessons and learn new spells. We'll also meet students, professors, and locals, take part in school activities, and gradually uncover the secrets of the island and its unusual inhabitants.

Beneath the welcoming atmosphere lies a more serious story. Glimmerwick still bears the scars of a mysterious phenomenon known as the Silence, which once threatened the world's magic and music. Our journey is therefore about more than studying and making friends. It's also an opportunity to discover the island's history and uncover the truth behind its many mysteries.

That said, don't expect a traditional RPG where you're constantly drawing weapons and fighting your way through hordes of enemies. Songs of Glimmerwick takes a different approach. Its focus is on exploration, conversations, learning, and everyday life. Progress isn't measured solely by the abilities you unlock, but also by how much you learn about the world and the people who inhabit it.

When Music Becomes Magic

The game's biggest selling point is its music-based magic system. Rather than simply equipping spells from a menu, you'll learn new melodies through short musical mini-games and then use their magical properties in a variety of situations.

Magic isn't limited to solving puzzles or unlocking new paths, either. Your melodies can influence the environment, make gardening easier, enchant tools, summon rain, and help you access previously unreachable areas. Music becomes an integral part of almost every aspect of the experience instead of being a gimmick designed to make the game stand out from its competitors.

Learning new melodies provides a satisfying sense of progression, particularly when you discover how a newly acquired spell can make previously tedious tasks much easier. Musical challenges and potion-making mini-games also provide a welcome break from the daily routine, although their appeal will naturally depend on how much you enjoy these kinds of activities.

The important thing is that Songs of Glimmerwick never tries to be a fast-paced action game. You're expected to slow down, learn how things work, and put your knowledge to good use. If that sounds appealing, its distinctive approach to magic is one of the biggest reasons to keep exploring.

Life Doesn't End When Classes Are Over

Beyond classes and spellcasting, much of the experience revolves around gardening, gathering resources, fishing, brewing potions, and getting to know the people of Glimmerwick. You can tend the school's garden, explore the woods, discover new parts of the island, or simply spend time talking to the characters you encounter along the way.

These activities aren't just filler between major story beats. The materials you collect and the plants you grow can contribute to your progression, while conversations and exploration often lead to new quests and reveal additional details about the world.

One of the game's strongest ideas is that everyday school life isn't treated as an obstacle standing between you and the next important event. Instead, it's an essential part of the adventure. Classes, school activities, and seasonal festivities help make the academy feel like a living place rather than a collection of rooms you pass through on your way to the next objective.

The way the game handles time is another welcome touch. Unlike many games in this genre that constantly pressure you to watch the clock, Songs of Glimmerwick pauses time during important activities. You don't have to panic about being late for class or abandon an interesting discovery because the day is almost over. You can explore at your own pace, which fits the game's relaxed nature perfectly.

A World Straight Out of an Illustrated Storybook

The art style is one of the game's most striking features. Glimmerwick feels like a world taken from a beautifully illustrated storybook, filled with lush vegetation, unusual creatures, winding woodland paths, and distinctive buildings. Rather than chasing realism, the game builds its identity through stylized visuals and carefully crafted details.

The soundtrack reinforces that atmosphere. Since music plays such an important role in the story and gameplay, it isn't merely pleasant background noise accompanying your journey from one location to another. It's part of Glimmerwick's identity, helping each area establish its own mood and personality.

The voice acting deserves credit as well. Fully voiced dialogue helps bring the characters to life, making conversations feel more personal than exchanges with NPCs who exist solely to hand out quests.

Taken together, these elements create an inviting atmosphere that's easy to get lost in. The game doesn't need something spectacular to happen every few minutes to keep you engaged. Sometimes, wandering through the woods, listening to the music, and seeing what's waiting around the next corner is more than enough.

When a Relaxed Pace Becomes a Problem

Unfortunately, the game's leisurely approach is also its biggest weakness. The opening hours are fairly slow, with plenty of dialogue, tutorials, and introductions to work through before the adventure begins to reveal the full extent of its possibilities. It takes some patience to unlock the various mechanics and reach the point where everyday life at the academy feels sufficiently varied.

Quest progression isn't always handled particularly well, either. At times, it's difficult to tell which objectives are central to the main story and which are optional activities. You may also find yourself lacking the ability needed to proceed, forcing you to turn your attention elsewhere and wait until new opportunities become available. The game rarely rushes you, but it doesn't always explain why you're being asked to wait.

Getting around can become another source of frustration. Travelling between the school, the nearby settlement, and more distant areas involves plenty of walking, while fast-travel options are limited. Initially, this contributes to the feeling of exploring an unfamiliar world. As your quest log fills up, however, returning to places you've already visited can become tiresome.

Inventory management doesn't help matters. Limited storage space forces you to think carefully about what to keep, what to sell, and when to head back to your storage. In a game built around gathering resources and crafting, a more convenient inventory system would make everyday activities considerably less cumbersome.

None of these problems ruins the experience, but they reveal areas where the game could be improved. A slow pace can be enjoyable when every new discovery feels meaningful. When you're repeatedly covering the same ground or completing similar tasks without particularly interesting rewards, however, relaxation can start to feel like busywork.

Songs of Glimmerwick review

Songs of Glimmerwick is a charming RPG with a clear idea of the experience it wants to deliver. Its greatest strength isn't a complex combat system or a constant stream of spectacular events. Instead, it's the world itself and the freedom to explore it at your own pace. Music-based magic, school life, a distinctive art style, and a lovely soundtrack combine to create an adventure that's easy to settle into.

On the other hand, the slow opening, occasionally unclear quest progression, limited fast-travel options, and somewhat cumbersome inventory management prevent the game from reaching its full potential. These shortcomings could be addressed with better guidance and a handful of quality-of-life improvements, but Glimmerwick already has enough personality to appeal to fans of the genre.

If you're looking for a relaxed fantasy adventure where you can learn spells, explore an unusual world, and enjoy the everyday routines of a magical school, Songs of Glimmerwick is worth considering. If you prefer a brisk pace, constant action, and clearly signposted objectives, this adventure may demand more patience than you're willing to give it.
