Retro Arcade Action with a Modern Twist
Utopia Must Fall is one of those games that sounds like it has too many ideas on paper, yet somehow manages to make all of them work surprisingly well.
It's a retro arcade shooter infused with strong roguelite elements, successfully blending the spirit of classics like Missile Command, Asteroids, and Space Invaders. You take command of the last surviving human city—Utopia—and defend its citizens against increasingly chaotic waves of enemies. Every wave is more intense than the last, and once your city falls, it's game over. You start again, hopefully armed with better upgrades and a smarter strategy.

How Does It Play?
The gameplay loop is simple but incredibly addictive. Survive a wave and you're rewarded with upgrades called Contracts. Fail, lose part of your population, and start over. The upgrades are divided into three main categories: weapons, shields, and drones, and this is where the game really shines. Every decision matters. Invest too heavily in offense and your defenses collapse. Focus too much on drones and your main cannon won't be powerful enough to keep up. The constant need to balance attack, defense, and support makes every run feel like a strategic puzzle rather than just another arcade shooter.
Controls and Gameplay Feel
The game feels best when played with a mouse. Left-click launches missiles while moving the mouse left and right rotates your main turret. After about thirty minutes, I found myself flying across the screen with the mouse, trying to intercept every incoming threat like a true arcade veteran. Controller support is available, but I found it noticeably less comfortable, so I'd definitely recommend playing with a mouse whenever possible.
The Best Moments
Boss battles are easily the highlight of the experience. I barely survived the first couple of encounters, but finally taking one down feels incredibly rewarding. Those fights really show whether you've been making the right upgrade choices throughout your run.
Visually and sonically, Utopia Must Fall is a love letter to classic arcade games. The pseudo-vector graphics, flickering CRT effects, 80s-inspired fonts, and excellent synthwave soundtrack create an authentic retro atmosphere. Watching your city slowly evolve with new defenses and structures also provides a satisfying sense of progression between waves.

Minor Issues
Some enemy projectiles heading toward the city can be difficult to spot once the screen fills with explosions and effects. After extended play sessions, the waves may start to feel somewhat repetitive, although the solid variety of enemy types helps keep things interesting. Some upgrades also come with hidden drawbacks—for example, “super rockets” that occasionally turn out to be duds. It's an interesting design choice that encourages experimentation, but it can be frustrating during your first few runs.

Final Verdict
Utopia Must Fall is an excellent blend of classic arcade shooting and modern roguelite progression. It never becomes overly complicated, yet it offers enough strategic depth to keep you experimenting with different builds for hours. If you love old-school arcade shooters but want something more engaging than simply chasing a high score, this is exactly the kind of game you're looking for. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for a fast-paced, stylish retro experience that also rewards careful planning and smart decision-making between runs.
Score: 8/10
