Tales of Eternia Remastered – A Classic Worth Revisiting

Tales of Eternia Remastered: proves that a compelling story, memorable characters, and engaging combat can stand the test of time. Its new options make the adventure more accessible and customizable, but dated minigames and frustrating sections reveal the age of the original. Despite these shortcomings, it is a worthwhile return for fans of classic JRPGs. – NikolaOtasevic

Making an Older JRPG Easier to Enjoy

Revisiting a classic role-playing game can be a complicated experience. What once felt like a deep and rewarding adventure may now come with mechanics that demand more patience than modern players are willing to give. Tales of Eternia Remastered attempts to bridge that gap, bringing an older entry in the Tales franchise back with additional options designed to make its journey more flexible.

The most significant improvements are not necessarily visual. Instead, the remaster gives players greater control over progression and combat. Experience gains, currency rewards, and several proficiency systems can be adjusted, while item acquisition and skill progression can be accelerated. Players can also reduce random encounters or disable them entirely.

These options make a meaningful difference to the overall pace. Those who want to experience the adventure without spending so much time fighting familiar enemies can do so, while players looking for a tougher challenge have access to Extreme difficulty. The result is a version of the game that gives players more freedom to decide how much of its original challenge they want to preserve.

Battle Fast Mode is another useful addition, particularly when revisiting previously explored areas. It helps reduce the time spent on routine encounters, allowing the adventure to maintain its momentum.

Not every new feature is equally successful. Objective markers can make progression more straightforward, but they also risk taking some of the uncertainty out of exploration. Their usefulness depends on personal preference, and being able to disable them is a welcome decision.

A Journey Between Two Worlds

At the centre of Tales of Eternia is a conflict that gradually expands beyond the lives of its main characters. Reid and Farah begin their journey in Infernia, where a mysterious arrival introduces them to Meredy, a girl from the distant world of Celestia. Her warning about the impending Grand Fall sets the larger story in motion.

The premise gives the adventure a clear direction without revealing everything about its world immediately. As the journey develops, the relationships between the main characters become an important part of the experience. Their different personalities and motivations provide more than a reason to keep travelling together, helping the story maintain its human element even as the stakes grow.

Meredy is particularly important to the group's dynamic, while the interactions between Reid, Farah, and Keele give the cast room to develop beyond their initial roles. The narrative also makes an effort to give its antagonists meaningful backgrounds, adding context to the conflict rather than treating every opposing character as a simple obstacle.

There is a useful contrast between the game's colourful presentation and the seriousness of its central threat. Humorous exchanges and character skits provide lighter moments, while the broader narrative is willing to tackle darker material. Optional activities and minigames add variety along the way, although their quality is less consistent than that of the main adventure.

Real-Time Combat With Room for Experimentation

The combat system is a major part of what gives Tales of Eternia its identity. Rather than relying on traditional turn-based encounters, the game uses the series’ Linear Motion Battle System, placing battles on a side-view field where attacks and special techniques are performed in real time.

This approach creates a more active style of combat. Players must consider positioning, timing, and the way different attacks can be combined. Arts provide additional offensive options, and learning their inputs and how to chain them effectively gives battles a satisfying technical element.

The system rewards familiarity. Simply repeating basic attacks is unlikely to be as effective or interesting as learning how the available techniques work together. Differences between attack types also encourage players to pay attention to their approach instead of treating every encounter identically.

Although the system belongs to an earlier era of JRPG design, its underlying mechanics remain engaging. The remaster's faster battle option is convenient for routine encounters, but the combat itself still provides a reason to stay involved when fights demand more attention.

Where the Original Design Becomes a Problem

The additional options improve accessibility, but they cannot eliminate every source of frustration. Some parts of the original design feel considerably less comfortable today, particularly when the game asks players to interact with its environment through less refined controls.

Minigames are an inconsistent part of the package. Activities that should provide a short diversion can become irritating when their controls make it difficult to perform simple actions. The rafting sequence is a notable example: steering requires patience, and collisions with the environment can turn a mandatory section into an unnecessarily drawn-out experience.

Exploration also has its awkward moments. Dungeon layouts do not always communicate where the player should go next, and environmental details can be easy to overlook. Certain puzzles demand precise movement or positioning, which can make their solutions feel more fiddly than satisfying.

These problems are particularly noticeable because the game offers so many ways to streamline other aspects of the experience. Adjusting encounter frequency or speeding up progression can save time, but those options do little to address sections where the underlying design itself is the obstacle.

This is the main limitation of the remaster. It provides useful quality-of-life improvements, yet some of the original game's rougher edges remain intact.

Tales of Eternia Remastered

Verdict

Tales of Eternia Remastered has enough substance to justify its return. The story provides a compelling reason to follow the journey, the characters give it personality, and the real-time combat offers more depth than its age might suggest. The expanded settings also make it easier to tailor the experience to different playstyles.

However, the remaster is not a complete overhaul. Awkward minigames, occasional navigation issues, and frustrating environmental challenges can interrupt an otherwise enjoyable adventure. Players expecting every aspect of an older JRPG to feel modern may find these shortcomings difficult to overlook.

For fans of classic Japanese role-playing games, there is still plenty to appreciate here. The new options make the experience more adaptable, while the underlying adventure retains the qualities that made it worth revisiting in the first place.

As a longtime gaming enthusiast, I took my first steps into gaming on the legendary Game Boy Advance, while the PlayStation 2 remains my favorite console of all time. My preferred genre is JRPGs, with the Persona series standing at the very top, continually impressing me with its rich storytelling and outstanding character development.
